Louisiana Seniors' Medicare Costs up, Choices & Coverage Hurt by ObamaCare
Landrieu Deceives Seniors, Families About ObamaCare Again
In 2010, Mary Landrieu said ObamaCare “strengthens Medicare.” According to the Associated Press, Landrieu said “‘I am very comfortable with the Senate version of this bill, which is not a government takeover, which is a public-private response to a major problem, which has some significant cost-containment measures, which strengthens Medicare and gives the private sector more affordable options,’ Landrieu said."
The truth is that Democrats slashed Medicare Advantage to pay for ObamaCare. Nearly 15 million seniors nationwide (close to 30% of all Medicare beneficiaries) rely on Medicare Advantage plans for their Medicare coverage. Many of these are low-income seniors who choose these options because they can’t afford the Medigap policies that more financially secure seniors use. In Louisiana alone, 207,811 seniors rely on Medicare Advantage plans (28% of all Medicare enrollees). They have been exposed to the ramifications of Landrieu's support for ObamaCare.
According to the Wall Street Journal, "seniors are discovering their choices are fewer, costs higher and coverage poorer too." Last week America’s Health Insurance Planssaid that in Louisiana, seniors on Medicare Advantage plans experienced cost increases and benefit cuts of an estimated $80-90 per month as a result of this year's 6 percent cut to the program. The Washington Post recently reported that "Doctors cut from Medicare Advantage networks struggle with what to tell patients."
Surveys reveal that seniors are highly satisfied with their Medicare Advantage coverage, yet every sitting Democratic Senator, including Mary Landrieu, voted the wrong way on an amendment specifically to prohibit these cuts to Medicare Advantage in 2010 (see #72).
"Mary Landrieu promised that ObamaCare wouldn't harm Louisiana seniors who rely on Medicare, but that simply wasn't true," said NRSC Press Secretary Brook Hougesen. "Mary Landrieu has repeatedly deceived Louisiana voters, and now she has the audacity to ask for their trust? Mary Landrieu slashed Medicare Advantage to pay for ObamaCare, and now those cuts mean fewer benefits and health care choices for seniors. Seniors can't trust Mary Landrieu."

In March 2010, Landrieu Voted To Kill An Amendment That Would Have Prohibited Cuts To Medicare Advantage Under ObamaCare. “Baucus, D-Mont., motion to table (kill) the Hatch, R-Utah., motion to commit the bill to the Finance Committee with instructions that it be reported back with changes that would prohibit cuts to the Medicare Advantage program and provide for an offset if the Health and Human Services Department certified that at least 1 million Medicare Advantage program participants would lose benefits under the changes in the reconciliation measure or the 2010 health care overhaul law. The bill would make changes existing health care law, revise student lending procedures and provide new revenue-raising provisions.” (H.R. 4872, CQ Vote #72: Motion agreed to 56-42: R 0-40; D 54-2; I 2-0, 3/24/10, Landrieu Voted Yea)
