Two Faced: After Avoiding President Obama, Landrieu Benefits from Obama $$$ & Fundraisers

When talking to Louisianians, Democrat Mary Landrieu will do whatever she can to distance herself from President Obama, who is extremely unpopular back at home. Just last November, Landrieu declined to even attend an event with Obama at the New Orleans Port.

Despite this, Mary Landrieu seems to have no problem collecting cash from the President and his liberal allies in Hollywood and New York City.

According to POLITICO: "The White House and Senate Democrats are preparing an extensive midterm campaign strategy built around one unavoidable fact: Hardly any candidates in the most competitive states want President Barack Obama anywhere near them. ...Obama’s unpopularity could cost Democrats the Senate, but vulnerable incumbents need the full resources of the White House to hang onto the majority."

Here's the subtle (and deceptive) part of the Landrieu/Obama strategy: "President Obama will host at least six fundraisers for Senate Democrats ahead of the 2014 midterm elections, a Democratic aide said Monday. The president's commitment comes after he huddled last week in the Oval Office with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee chairman Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and DSCC Executive Director Guy Cecil."  The president is also planning to hold fundraisers for Senate Majority PAC.

Recent polls show that most Louisiana voters have an unfavorable view of Barack Obama. Despite that, time and time again, Landrieu has put politics ahead of the interest of Louisianians, voting with the President 97% of the time while pocketing campaign cash and support from President Obama's fundraisers for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), Organizing for Action (OFA), and Senate Majority PAC (Harry Reid's Super PAC).

"Mary Landrieu pokes President Obama with one hand and collects Obama's liberal political cash and resources with the other; a brazen display of hypocrisy if there ever was one," said NRSC Press Secretary Brook Hougesen. "If Landrieu wants her actions to match her words, she'll refuse to accept campaign money and resources from President Obama, the DSCC, OFA and Majority PAC. Until then, she's just another Washington hypocrite trying to have it both ways."

In 2013, Mary Landrieu Voted With President Obama 97 Percent Of The Time.(CQ Voting Studies - Sen. Mary Landrieu, CQ Roll Call, Updated February 2014)

Landrieu Said “I Think The President Is More Focused On Running The Country Than Helping Me In My Reelection.” “In the Senate, Democrats in tough reelection races have begun to distance themselves from Obama… Sen. Mary Landrieu (La.), another at-risk Democrat, said before Wednesday’s meeting, ‘I think the president is more focused on running the country than helping me in my reelection.’” (David Nakamura, “Obama Vows To Help Democrats In Midterms, Including By Staying Away If Necessary,” The Washington Post, 2/5/14)

In November 2013, Landrieu Declined To Attend An Event With Obama At The New Orleans Port.  “Some Democrats have declined to attend events with Obama when he has visited their states. Landrieu did not join him at a November event on the economy at a New Orleans port.” (David Nakamura, “Obama Vows To Help Democrats In Midterms, Including By Staying Away If Necessary,” The Washington Post, 2/5/14)

  • “Landrieu Joined Him Aboard Air Force One, But She Did Not Appear With Him At The Port Event, Citing A Conflicting Engagement Elsewhere In The State.”  “Even as Obama sought to refocus the conversation on economic growth, he could not escape the political fallout from the health-care mess. Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) joined him aboard Air Force One, but she did not appear with him at the port event, citing a conflicting engagement elsewhere in the state.” (David Nakamura, “Health-Care Woes Follow Obama To New Orleans,” The Washington Post, 11/8/13)
